The selection of cat breeds
At the beginning of his cohabitation with the man, the cat was peculiar for his skill as hunter of rats and for his kindness as a pet; it was not until later that the criterion of breeding and breeding was applied for essentially aesthetic purposes .
In England, around the middle of the nineteenth century, cats began to congratulate themselves on the characteristics of their darlings, trying to select and improve . The first real feline exhibition took place at the Crystal Palace in London in 1871. Then Angora and Siamese cats were introduced to England.
Associations were created to regulate cat shows and breeding. The first National Cat Club was founded in 1887, then many feline associations appeared in other countries.
A hundred cat breeds recognized today
About 100 breeds are recognized today ; they are divided into four categories, to which must be added domestic cats:
- long-haired cats : Persian and exotic
- semi-long-haired : sacred Burma, Norwegian, hand coon, Turkish angora, turkish van, ragdoll
- shorthaired cats : Abyssinian, Russian blue, british, burmese, Burmilla, Carthusian, Ceylon, Egyptian Mau , european, japanese bobtail, korat, manx, ocicat, devon rex, cornish rex, german rex, somali
- Siamese and Oriental : Balinese, Javanese, Siamese, Oriental.
D ' other varieties have been more recently selected but are not yet recognized by all feline associations: curly-haired (short-haired, short-haired, long-haired), short-haired American, hard-haired, Bengali (short-haired) , short-haired, cymric, havana brown, scottish fold, singapore, sphynx, tiffany, medium-haired
