The dog and the unknown animals
These unknown animals can be found in the street or come to your home.
The main problem is to teach your dog not to indulge in his instincts. Avoid fights . It is always more difficult to manage this situation outside than at home, where we "feel it coming". A fighting dog does not listen to anything or anyone. Unfortunately, it is only after the fight that you will be able to teach him that he must not fight.
This is the whole problem of this learning. Only "practical work" is educational. You are not going to provoke the fight. To avoid it, you must "control" your dog. By the recall order for example. It is necessary, if your dog seems brawler, to do many exercises of reminder. We have stated above that education should be done on an ongoing basis.
But we advise you for this specific case to repeat the exercises, so that you are sure that your dog will answer the call, even in delicate circumstances. Remind him more and more away. Cause difficult situations: play it with a friend's dog and then call it back into play.
Only in this way will he listen to you before the fight. What to do when this happens? The first rule is departure. Pretend to leave; dogs often fight only in the presence of masters to prove their strength. If the two owners leave, the dogs will follow them.
You can also try to get your dog's attention by calling him, without screaming, and backing up. Above all, do not interfere: it's the insured bite. Do not take the defense of the smallest either. The solution has nothing to do with the responsibilities of one or the other.
The meeting with you
We will take up here the notions evoked in "Learning the territory", adapting them to this new situation. Your dog is on his territory. In no case should you privilege the "visitor". We agree that it is sometimes difficult. Guests will not always understand why you do not insulate your dog when it will prevent clashes.
It would be very unwelcome to have your visitors lock up their dog or put it back in the car. This is the right solution. The "guest" dog must comply with the habits of the house. If you lock up your own dog, he will feel it as a provocation and a humiliation: an intruder enters his territory without being able to defend himself. Do not be surprised, then, that he takes revenge.
However, your dog must not provoke the other. The simplest is to suggest to his masters to install their dog in a corner of the entrance and ask yours to stay in his basket. Do not put the "visitor" in a room that is usually forbidden to your dog.
Also try to leave them in a room other than the one you are talking to (the entrance, for example). Indeed, the majority of fights are declared in the presence of the masters . In their absence, the "visitor" very easily submits to the domination of the "resident."
At the departure of the other dog, congratulate your pet for his good behavior. Learning from others is fundamental to completing a dog's education. A well-bred animal at home but completely "foufou" or aggressive outside makes life impossible for its owner. We have seen how important the notion of hierarchy is in this learning, between the animals themselves and between animals and people. These relationships are sometimes difficult to accept by the owners.
